Pain in the right upper abdomen

Overview

Right upper abdominal pain is discomfort or aching sensation located in the upper right portion of the belly, beneath the ribcage. This pain may range from mild to severe and can be sharp, dull, or cramping in nature.

Common Causes

This type of pain often occurs due to gallbladder issues, such as gallstones or inflammation, especially after eating fatty or greasy foods. Liver conditions, including fatty liver disease or hepatitis, can also cause discomfort in this area. Sometimes muscle strain from heavy lifting or intense exercise, as well as digestive problems like acid reflux or gastritis, may contribute to upper right abdominal pain. Stress and poor eating habits can worsen these underlying conditions.

Severity Levels

Mild: Occasional discomfort that doesn't interfere with daily activities and may come and go throughout the day.

Moderate: Persistent pain that affects your ability to concentrate or perform normal tasks, may worsen with movement or eating.

Severe: Intense pain that prevents you from functioning normally, may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or fever requiring immediate medical attention.

Medical Attention

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe pain, fever, yellowing of skin or eyes, persistent vomiting, or difficulty breathing. Contact your healthcare provider if the pain lasts more than a few hours, worsens over time, or is accompanied by nausea, loss of appetite, or changes in bowel movements. Don't delay care if you have a history of gallbladder or liver problems and develop new symptoms.
