Muscle weakness
Overview
Muscle weakness is a condition characterized by reduced strength or inability to exert normal force with muscles, making it difficult to perform everyday activities. This symptom can affect specific muscle groups or the entire body, resulting in fatigue, difficulty lifting objects, or trouble with movement and coordination.
Common Causes
Muscle weakness can result from not getting enough physical activity, which causes muscles to lose strength and mass over time. Poor nutrition, particularly insufficient protein intake, can also lead to weakened muscles since they need proper fuel to maintain their strength. Dehydration and lack of sleep can temporarily reduce muscle function and make you feel weaker than usual. As we age, our muscles naturally lose some of their strength and size, which is a normal part of the aging process. Prolonged periods of inactivity, such as bed rest or sitting for long hours, can quickly lead to muscle weakness as well.
Severity Levels
Mild: You may notice slightly reduced strength when lifting objects or feel muscles tire more quickly than usual during normal activities. Most daily tasks can still be completed with minimal difficulty.
Moderate: Everyday activities like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or getting up from chairs become noticeably challenging and require more effort than before. You may need to take breaks more frequently.
Severe: Simple tasks like brushing teeth, combing hair, or walking short distances become extremely difficult or impossible without assistance. Standing or maintaining posture may require support.
Medical Attention
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden, severe muscle weakness, especially if it affects your breathing, swallowing, or ability to speak. Contact your doctor promptly if weakness is accompanied by fever, severe pain, numbness, or affects your ability to walk or perform daily activities. Schedule a routine appointment if you notice gradual weakness that persists for more than a few days or interferes with your normal routine, as early evaluation can help identify treatable causes.
