Flank pain or back pain related to kidneys
Overview
Flank pain is a sharp or dull aching sensation felt in the side of the body between the ribs and hip, often indicating kidney-related problems. This type of back pain typically occurs on one or both sides and may radiate from the kidney area toward the lower abdomen or groin.
Common Causes
Kidney-related flank or back pain commonly occurs due to kidney stones, which form when minerals crystallize in the kidneys and can cause intense pain as they move through the urinary tract. Urinary tract infections that spread to the kidneys can also cause significant discomfort in the back and side areas. Dehydration is a major lifestyle factor that increases the risk of kidney stones, as concentrated urine allows minerals to clump together more easily. A diet high in sodium, sugar, or certain proteins can also contribute to stone formation, while inadequate fluid intake throughout the day puts additional strain on kidney function.
Severity Levels
Mild: You may experience a dull ache or mild discomfort in your side that comes and goes, similar to muscle soreness. The pain is manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers and doesn't significantly impact your daily activities.
Moderate: The pain becomes more noticeable and persistent, making it difficult to find comfortable positions. You may need to take breaks from normal activities and might require stronger pain management to get through your day.
Severe: The pain is intense and constant, often described as excruciating, making it nearly impossible to sit still or concentrate on anything else. This level of pain typically requires immediate medical attention and may be accompanied by nausea or inability to function normally.
Medical Attention
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe, sudden pain that prevents normal activities, especially when accompanied by fever, chills, nausea, or blood in your urine. Contact your doctor promptly if the pain persists for more than a day, worsens over time, or is accompanied by burning during urination or frequent urination. Don't delay getting help if you have a history of kidney stones or kidney disease and develop new or worsening symptoms.
