Overview

Think of a semen analysis as a comprehensive performance evaluation for millions of microscopic swimmers competing in the ultimate race for conception. Just like coaches evaluate athletes on their numbers, speed, and form, this test examines your sperm's concentration (how many are ready to compete), motility (how well they swim toward their target), morphology (whether they have the right shape for success), plus the volume and quality of the fluid that carries them on their journey. Each measurement tells a different part of your fertility story - concentration shows how well your body produces sperm, motility reveals their swimming strength, and morphology indicates whether they're built for the job of fertilization.

What makes this test particularly valuable is that it captures a snapshot of your reproductive health over the past 2-3 months, since that's how long sperm take to fully develop. This means the results reflect how factors like stress, illness, lifestyle choices, or even that medication you took weeks ago might be affecting your fertility. Whether you're actively trying to conceive, investigating potential challenges, or simply want to understand your reproductive health, a semen analysis provides the essential information needed to make informed decisions about your fertility journey and explore appropriate treatment options if needed.

How to prepare

Abstain from ejaculation for 2-5 days before collection for optimal results (not longer than 7 days). Visit collection centre for sample collection in private room. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and recreational drugs for several days before test. Maintain normal diet and activities. Inform provider about medications, supplements, recent illness, or fever that might affect results.

Understanding results

Normal parameters: Concentration >15 million/mL; Progressive motility >32%; Normal morphology >4%; Volume 1.5-5.0 mL; pH 7.2-8.0. Results categorized as normal, oligospermia (low count), asthenospermia (poor motility), teratospermia (abnormal morphology), or combinations affecting fertility potential.

After the test

If abnormal results found, consult fertility specialist or urologist for comprehensive evaluation. Treatment options may include lifestyle modifications, nutritional supplementation, hormone therapy, surgical interventions, or assisted reproductive technologies. Repeat testing may be recommended to confirm results and monitor treatment response.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Sperm parameters can vary significantly between samples, so abnormal results are typically confirmed with a second analysis 2-4 weeks later for accurate assessment.
  • Heat exposure, stress, illness, medications, smoking, excessive alcohol, poor diet, obesity, and environmental toxins can all negatively impact sperm parameters.
  • Since sperm production takes about 74 days, lifestyle changes typically take 2-3 months to be reflected in improved semen analysis results.
  • Yes, sperm quality can fluctuate due to age, health changes, lifestyle factors, and environmental exposures. Regular monitoring may be recommended in some cases.
  • Many causes of abnormal semen parameters are treatable through lifestyle changes, medical interventions, or assisted reproductive technologies. Consult a fertility specialist for personalized guidance.
  • Yes, sperm quality gradually declines with age, particularly after age 40, affecting concentration, motility, and DNA integrity, which may impact fertility and pregnancy outcomes.
