Overview

A random urine iodine test measures how much iodine your kidneys are excreting. Because most dietary iodine is absorbed and then cleared through urine, the concentration in a single sample gives a practical indication of your recent intake.

Iodine deficiency has become more common as salt intake has dropped and processed foods have replaced iodine-rich whole foods in many diets. Adequate iodine is needed for thyroid hormone production.

Suited to people who want a straightforward check of their recent iodine intake, those with thyroid concerns, or anyone on a restrictive diet who may not be getting enough iodine from food.

How to prepare

First morning urine gives the most consistent result. Stop iodine supplements for three days before testing. Avoid high-iodine foods such as seaweed and iodised salt for 24 hours before collection.

After the test

Discuss results with your practitioner. If intake appears low, they may suggest increasing iodine-rich foods or appropriate supplementation. If levels are high, they can help identify the source.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your report shows urinary iodine concentration compared to WHO reference ranges. Levels below 100 mcg/L may suggest your intake has been low. Levels above 300 mcg/L may indicate you are taking in more than needed.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.
