Overview

Think of Hepatitis B serology testing as your body's complete story about this liver virus – like having a detective piece together whether you've ever encountered it, fought it off, or need protection from it. This comprehensive panel doesn't just give you a simple yes or no answer; it reveals the full picture by measuring different markers that each tell part of your immune system's history with Hepatitis B. Some markers show if you're currently infected, others reveal if you're immune from vaccination or past infection, and still others indicate how active the virus might be in your system.

Understanding your Hepatitis B status matters because this virus can be a silent threat – it spreads through blood and body fluids, and while some people's immune systems clear it completely, others develop chronic infections that can quietly damage the liver over years, potentially leading to serious complications like cirrhosis or liver cancer. Whether you're a healthcare worker with occupational exposure risk, planning to travel, starting a new relationship, or simply want to know if you need vaccination, this testing gives you the complete information needed to protect yourself and your loved ones while making informed decisions about your health and medical care.

Understanding results

Results show pattern of multiple markers indicating: susceptible (all negative), immune from vaccination (Anti-HBs positive only), immune from natural infection (Anti-HBc and Anti-HBs positive), acute infection (HBsAg and Anti-HBc IgM positive), or chronic infection (HBsAg positive >6 months).

After the test

Based on results: if susceptible, receive Hepatitis B vaccination; if acutely infected, supportive care and monitoring; if chronically infected, antiviral treatment evaluation and regular monitoring; if immune, no vaccination needed. Follow public health guidelines for prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • HBsAg indicates active infection, Anti-HBs shows immunity, Anti-HBc reveals past/current infection, HBeAg suggests high infectivity, and Anti-HBe indicates lower viral activity. The pattern of results determines your status.
  • Immunity typically lasts at least 20-30 years and possibly lifelong in most people. Booster doses are not routinely recommended for healthy individuals with normal immune systems.
  • Acute Hepatitis B often resolves on its own, but chronic Hepatitis B cannot be cured. However, antiviral treatments can suppress the virus and prevent liver damage in most people.
  • Test immediately for baseline, then at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after exposure. Post-exposure prophylaxis with vaccine and immunoglobulin may be recommended within 24-48 hours.
  • Acute infection lasts less than 6 months and often resolves completely. Chronic infection persists longer than 6 months and may require lifelong monitoring and treatment.
  • People with current or past Hepatitis B infection cannot donate blood in most countries. Those immune from vaccination can typically donate blood normally.
