Experiencing frequent infections, slow wound healing, or fatigue and want assessment of antioxidant status and immune-supporting vitamin levels?
The Vitamin C Blood Test measures levels of this essential vitamin, which supports immune defence, helps the body heal, and protects cells from damage. Low vitamin C can cause fatigue, slow wound healing, and in severe cases, scurvy. Adequate levels are important for energy, skin health, and overall wellbeing.

Your body depends on vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, like a car depends on oil – it's essential for keeping everything running smoothly, but unlike many nutrients, your body can't make it on its own. This vital vitamin acts as your cellular bodyguard, protecting your cells from daily damage while also serving as the building block for collagen (which keeps your skin, joints, and blood vessels strong) and powering up your immune system to fight infections. The vitamin C blood test measures how much of this crucial nutrient is circulating in your bloodstream, specifically assessing serum vitamin C levels, giving you a clear picture of your vitamin C status and whether you're getting enough from your dietary vitamin C intake and supplements.
When your vitamin C levels are too low, indicating a potential vitamin C deficiency, your body starts sending signals – you might notice you're getting sick more often, cuts and bruises take forever to heal, or you're feeling exhausted and achy. Easy bruising is a common sign of low vitamin C levels. On the flip side, optimal levels mean your immune system is armed and ready, your body can repair itself efficiently, and you're better protected against the daily wear and tear that ages us over time. This test is especially valuable if you don't eat many fruits and vegetables, smoke, deal with chronic stress, or want to make sure your nutritional status is optimal to support immune health. The vitamin C test is used to evaluate your body's vitamin C status, helping to detect significant deficiency and assess the risk of deficiency, particularly in individuals with specific conditions like diabetes or those following a restrictive diet. Understanding your serum vitamin C levels can guide you in making dietary changes or considering vitamin C supplementation to ensure you maintain normal vitamin C levels and support overall health.

You may benefit from the Vitamin C Blood Test
Essential for individuals with frequent illness, poor wound healing, suspected vitamin C deficiency, or anyone needing antioxidant and immune status assessment.
Frequent infections (more than 4 colds per year)
Slow healing of cuts or wounds
Easy bruising with minor bumps
Bleeding gums
Easy bruising
Slow wound healing
Deep wrinkles appearing suddenly
Loss of skin elasticity
Frequent infections
How to prepare
Special handling is required as vitamin C is sensitive to light and heat. Fasting may be recommended. Inform healthcare provider of all vitamin C supplements and recent dietary intake that might affect serum vitamin C results.
Understanding results
Results show vitamin C levels compared to normal ranges. Low levels indicate deficiency requiring dietary changes or supplementation, while optimal levels suggest adequate antioxidant protection and immune support.
After the test
Address low vitamin C through increased dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, appropriate supplementation, lifestyle modifications to reduce oxidative stress, and regular monitoring to ensure optimal levels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Signs include frequent infections, slow wound healing, fatigue, joint pain, easy bruising, poor skin health, and in severe cases, scurvy with bleeding gums and loose teeth.
Daily requirements vary but generally range from 75-90mg for adults, with higher needs for smokers, pregnant women, and those under stress or illness, to maintain adequate serum vitamin C levels.
Excellent sources include citrus fruits, berries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, strawberries, tomatoes, and leafy green vegetables.
Vitamin C is water-soluble and excess is usually excreted, but very high doses may cause digestive upset, kidney stones, or interfere with certain medical tests.
Smokers need about 35mg more vitamin C daily than non-smokers due to increased oxidative stress and faster vitamin C depletion from smoking.
While vitamin C may not prevent colds in most people, adequate levels support immune function and may reduce cold duration and severity, especially in people under physical stress.
