Eye pain or pressure
Overview
Eye pain or pressure is discomfort, aching, or a feeling of heaviness in or around one or both eyes. This symptom can range from mild irritation to severe throbbing pain and may be accompanied by sensitivity to light or visual disturbances.
Common Causes
Eye pain or pressure can result from spending long hours looking at computer screens or digital devices, which causes eye strain and reduces blinking frequency. Dry environments, allergies, or wearing contact lenses for extended periods can also irritate the eyes and create discomfort. Sinus congestion from colds or allergies often causes pressure around the eyes due to blocked nasal passages. Stress and fatigue can lead to tension headaches that manifest as pressure behind or around the eyes.
Severity Levels
Mild: Slight discomfort or irritation that doesn't interfere with daily activities and may come and go throughout the day.
Moderate: Noticeable pain or pressure that affects your ability to focus on tasks, may cause you to squint frequently, or requires you to take breaks from activities like reading or computer work.
Severe: Intense pain that significantly impacts your daily life, prevents you from performing normal activities, or is accompanied by vision changes, severe light sensitivity, or nausea.
Medical Attention
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden severe pain, vision changes, halos around lights, or nausea and vomiting along with the discomfort. Contact your doctor if the pain persists for more than a day, worsens despite rest, or is accompanied by discharge, redness, or light sensitivity. Also see a healthcare provider if you have a history of glaucoma or recent eye injury.
