Gold Blood Test

$55.00 AUD

Receiving gold-based medical treatments, have occupational exposure to gold, or need monitoring for potential gold accumulation?

Measures gold concentration in blood. Used to monitor gold-based medical treatments and assess occupational exposure in mining, jewellery manufacturing, and electronics production. Gold accumulates in tissues over time, making regular monitoring important.

Overview

The Gold Blood Test measures the concentration of gold in your blood. Most people have negligible gold levels, so this test is primarily relevant in two situations: monitoring gold-based medical treatment and assessing occupational exposure.

Gold compounds (such as auranofin or sodium aurothiomalate) have been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, though newer medications have largely replaced them. For people still receiving gold therapy, regular blood monitoring is important because gold accumulates in tissues over time and has a narrow range between therapeutic and toxic levels. Elevated gold can affect the kidneys, blood cells, skin and liver.

Occupational exposure may occur in mining, jewellery manufacturing, electronics production and dental work. For workers in these industries, periodic testing helps catch accumulation before symptoms develop.

Symptoms

Suited to people receiving gold therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, workers with occupational gold exposure in mining, jewellery or electronics, or anyone needing toxicity assessment after gold exposure.

Questions

  • Gold compounds have anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties that can reduce joint inflammation and slow disease progression, though newer treatments are now more commonly used.
  • Typically monthly during initial treatment, then every 2 to 3 months during maintenance therapy.
  • Symptoms may include skin rashes, mouth sores, kidney problems, blood cell changes, liver dysfunction and gastrointestinal issues.
  • Gold can persist in tissues for months to years after treatment stops, with an elimination half-life of several months.
  • Wearing gold jewellery does not typically release significant amounts into the bloodstream.
  • Yes. Newer DMARDs and biologic therapies are now more commonly used for rheumatoid arthritis.

How to prepare

No fasting required. Let the pathology staff know about any gold-containing medications and any recent dental work or occupational exposures involving gold. Blood sample collected at a pathology centre.

After the test

Your healthcare provider can advise on next steps based on your results. For people on gold therapy, dose adjustments or more frequent monitoring may be recommended. Elevated levels in occupational settings may prompt workplace exposure review. Report any new symptoms such as skin changes, mouth sores or changes in urine to your doctor.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show the gold concentration in your blood. For people on gold therapy, therapeutic levels are typically 1 to 3 mg/L. Levels above this range may indicate increased risk of side effects. For occupational screening, any significant elevation above baseline warrants investigation. Your healthcare provider can interpret results based on your treatment plan or exposure history.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
